During night two of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, former President Barack Obama and his wife, former First Lady Michelle Obama, took center stage. In their speeches, which gave a prevailing message of hope for the future of the country, the Obamas championed and celebrated presidential candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, while criticizing their opponent, Donald Trump.
“Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us,” Michelle said in a now-viral moment in her speech. “Doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better.”
“I want to know who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those ‘Black jobs’,” she joked, pointing to Trump’s false claims that immigrants are being hired for so-called “Black jobs.”
And as the stadium cheered and got inspired by Michelle’s moving speech, some viewers, including those at home, pointed out an important detail: she was wearing braids! In addition to a powerful navy jumpsuit by Monse, Michelle rocked a side-part braided ponytail that twisted all the way down to her waist.
As a reminder, Michelle has been candid in the past about keeping her hair straight during her husband’s presidency. “Let me keep my hair straight,” she said of her mindset during her book tour for The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times, per Washington Post. “Let’s get health care passed.”
So while she stuck to that rule all throughout the eight years, it seems Michelle has officially turned the page. And good news, her fans are loving it!
“Listen Michelle Obama rocking braids at the #DNCConvention better end the whole braids ain’t professional conversation because baby she looks elegant, educated, and snatched,” wrote one X user. “#StopPolicingBlackWomen.”
“Lemme just say this… Michelle Obama wearing braids during the DNC is a visual example of the evolution of hair in American politics,” another echoed. Michelle Obama has braids in for the DNC. Shouldn’t be a big deal, but it’s huge,” reminded another X user. “I LOVE this. Love love love love.”
After all, if the country wants to elect its first Black woman to lead the White House, we shouldn’t be phased by some braids, we should be championing them!
