Taylor Swift has once again captured the spotlight, not by way of a questionable re-release of her chart-topping album, The Tortured Poets Department, but through sartorial choices — specifically her wedding guest attire.
Swift opted for a cream-colored Zimmermann dress with floral details at the hem, skirting the forbidden territory of white typically reserved for the bride, while attending model Karen Elson’s wedding in New York City at Electric Lady Studios two day after supporting her boyfriend of just over a year, Travis Kelce, at the Kansas City Chief’s home opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
While some speculated an all-white dress code might have been in place, this theory was quickly dispelled. Other guests showcased a variety of hues, including Helena Christensen in a bold red and Lana Del Rey in a soft pale blue. Even Karlie Kloss, once rumored to have had a romantic fling with Swift in 2014, sported a one-shoulder, wine-colored dress.
The dress, which you can see here, feels appropriate for any other end-of-summer day in the city, but it still some observers wondering if she had crossed the line into bridal territory by transitioning from day to night in the dress. The ensemble even included a “Something Blue” accessory — a circular Vivienne Westwood pouch bag in a striking sky-blue hue — adding yet another somewhat controversial nod to bridal wedding traditions.
Reddit users didn’t hold back their opinions on Swift’s controversial choice. One remarked, “I find the outfits a little questionable for a wedding. White is definitely a choice,” while another, noting that only the bride’s daughter wore white as a bridesmaid, quipped, “Taylor is tacky as hell, she looks like she could be a second bridesmaid 😭.”
Swift is no stranger to dropping Easter eggs and incorporating symbolism into both her on-stage and day-to-day ensembles. Back in 2019, she explained how she used blue nail polish to foreshadow her 2014 album 1989.
“A specific way you can leave Easter eggs is on nails,” the singer revealed to Entertainment Weekly in 2019. “There was a specific occasion where I did a Spotify vertical video for ‘Delicate,’ and I painted my nails the exact color tones that I wanted the next album to be. Some people picked up on it immediately.” The star added that seeing fans pick up on it brings her joy. “It made me feel nice to know that when you plan something that far in advance — it’s kind of, you’re actually kind of just flexing on planning. That’s what an Easter egg really does. You’re really just like: ‘I planned this two years in advance!'”
Whether her cream dress was a rebellious nod to bridal fashion, hinting to fans that her walk down the aisle will happen as soon as she and Kelce iron out pre-nup details or simply a rare fashion misstep, it has certainly kept Swift in the headlines, where she seems to thrive.
