While some non-actors might find filming a nude scene unimaginable, actors have been doing it for decades like it’s no big deal. For Kathryn Hahn, for example, who stars in the new Marvel series Agatha All Along, stepping into her birthday suit might just be another way to tell the story.
And, in her new series, Hahn did just that, stripping off all her clothes and becoming the first woman to show her nude backside to Marvel audiences.
“Well, I came up with it,” Hahn said of the scene to Variety. “I thought it was good to see her as stripped down, literally, as we possibly could, which spoke into her powerlessness at the present moment.”
In the scene, Hahn’s character Agatha is set free from the spell cast by the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and has to strip away (literally and figuratively) from all her old personas from WandaVision.
“She’s been stripped of all of her power at this point in the series,” Hahn explained. “I mean, she really had nothing at that point, and so it became about illustrating that gap between that moment and her finding her power again.”
Showrunner Jac Schaeffer then remembered the moment Hahn suggested the nudity. “Kathryn was like, ‘Would she grab the robe? I don’t feel like she would grab the robe. I feel like she would really not care about being naked in front of the neighbors,’” Schaeffer remembered. “I told her, ‘That is the greatest idea I’ve ever heard.’”
“Kathryn has done so much work, and she’s done a lot of nudity and other things, and so it also felt very subversive to get Kathryn Hahn’s nudity into the MCU,” the showrunner added, with so much admiration for the actress’ commitment.
“It is so true to her character, and it makes me laugh out loud,” Schaeffer added. “And also, I mean, she looks incredible.”
Of course, this isn’t the first time Hahn’s been candid about filming NSFW scenes. In 2023, she told Variety that while she has no problem doing these scenes, having a scene partner she connects with can add to awkwardness. “You really hope those scenes are early on,” she said of the 2018 movie Private Life, which she co-starred with Paul Giamatti. “I was very glad that we got that over with before Paul and I got to know each other. It just made it much easier than if it had been much later in the shoot.”
“Sometimes it’s easier to just rip the Band-Aid off and get to it,” she added.
Looked like she ripped the Band-Aid all over again with Agatha!
