When the world first heard about Ariana Grande and Ethan Slater’s blossoming relationship on the set of Wicked, fans were, to say the least, a tad confused. After all, while Grande was going through her split from ex-husband Dalton Gomez, Slater was seemingly still married to his longtime partner and mother of his son, Lilly Jay. So, of course, rumors and headlines followed the couple wherever they went, even as they tried to keep their relationship under wraps.
But now, over a year since rumors of their relationship started bubbling up, Grande is setting the record straight on how their relationship really began, and how hard it’s been to deal with all the attention.
“The most disappointing part was to see so many people believe the worst version of it,” the “Dangerous Woman” singer told Vanity Fair in a new interview. “That was definitely a tough ride.”
From Grande’s quotes, it seems the speculation that Slater cheated on his ex-wife and abandoned his family is far from the truth. “There couldn’t be a less accurate depiction of a human being than the one that the tabloids spread about him,” she said.
And while Grande kept some details of their relationship under wraps, she defended her boyfriend’s character. “No one on this earth tries harder or spreads themselves thinner to be there for the people that he loves and cares about,” she said. “There is no one on this earth with a better heart, and that is something that no bulls– tabloid can rewrite in real life.”
But while she knows these things to be true, it wasn’t easy for Grande or Slater to find themselves in the middle of a tabloid rumor mill. “It definitely doesn’t get any easier, seeing some of the negativity that was birthed by disreputable tabloids,” Grande admitted. “Of course, I went through a lot of life changes during the filming of this movie. A lot of people that were working on it did. We were away for two years. So, of course, I understand why it was a field day for the tabloids to sort of create something that paid their bills.”
Looking back, Grande said the attacks on Slater are only the latest chapter of how the media has portrayed her. “Honestly, it’s taken me a lot of hard work to be able to last this long and to heal certain parts of my relationship to fame and to what I do because of these tabloids that have been trying to destroy me since I was 19 years old,” she said. “But you know what? I’m 31 years old and I’m not a perfect person, but I am definitely deeply good, and I’m proud of who I’m becoming. I will never let disreputable evil tabloids ruin my life or my perception of what is real and good.”
Overall, Grande is sticking to what she knows is true and is trying her best to move on from all the drama. And, as sources recently showed, Grande and Slater are stronger than ever as they get through it.
“Ethan is itching to propose to Ariana,” the source told Life & Style last week. “He’s already looking at rings, so it’s only a matter of time before he pops the question.”
Together through highs and lows, it seems!
