Mariah Carey is probably happy that the Christmas season is just around the corner because she might need some cash from her hit song, “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” The 55-year-old superstar is reportedly struggling with her finances, and some of the blame may be due to her ex-boyfriend, Bryan Tanaka.
According to the New York Post, Carey is dealing with $18.6 million worth of mortgage debt for her Manhattan penthouse. Even though she bought it in 1999 for $9 million in cash, she’s taken out several loans on the property over the years. Her financial strain might be the reason why she sold her Atlanta estate at a $1.73 million loss only 18 months after purchasing the residence. Carey is known to enjoy a luxurious lifestyle, but she wanted company on her well-heeled travels. Her ex-boyfriend also got to enjoy the finer things in life during their seven-year relationship.
“In the past, she’d lavish them with luxuries, new clothes, fancy haircuts, all the bling they wanted, plus private jets, gourmet meals, and five-star hotels and limo service,” a Carey insider told . “The reality is these guys cost Mariah a lot of money living the high life and basically, they had everything she had, but it was double everything.” The “Vision of Love” singer is now on a budget and “she can’t do it anymore.” That might mean rethinking her dating strategy, too.
“She’s considering whether it’s a better idea to latch onto someone with his own financial stability rather than a boy toy who, let’s face it, would only be a grifter,” the source added. Tanaka confirmed his split with Carey in a Dec. 26, 2023, Instagram post. “With mixed emotions, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” he wrote. “Our decision to embark on different paths is mutual, and as we navigate these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared. The memories we’ve created, and the artistic collaborations are etched in my heart forever.”
Carey might want to cut back on some of the luxuries for her dogs and herself because the New York Post claimed that she spends “$45,000 spa treatments for her dogs, $100,000 a month on exotic flowers, and $10,000 per session for hair and makeup” — that’s an astonishing number! Even ex-husband Nick Cannon joked about her love of money in 2022. “Mariah don’t step out of the house, it cost her $150,000, $200,000 just to walk out of the house,” he said on The Joe Budden Podcast.
Will Carey be able to rein it in after decades of excessive spending? With that hefty mortgage, she doesn’t have much of a choice, but her next boyfriend is either going to have to pay his way or be OK with Carey’s smaller lifestyle.
