Halle Berry hasn’t been married to singer Eric Benét since 2005, but she still hasn’t forgotten what he did to her during their marriage. The 58-year-old actress doesn’t seem open to forgiveness either — and that’s OK.
Berry appeared on the Monday, Oct. 7 episode of Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast when she spilled the tea about her ex. “I had one husband who said he was a sex addict,” she dished. “But I don’t f–ing believe that s–t.” Of course, Berry didn’t mention him by name, but fans knew exactly who she was talking about. The duo married in 2001, but the R&B singer was reportedly cheating on her by 2002. One of his mistresses even revealed the spicy details to News of The World just 10 days after her Oscar win for Monster’s Ball.
“Just days before Halle stood up and collected her Oscar her husband was in bed with me. She may be a star, but she doesn’t know how to keep her man. I give their marriage a year at the most,” Benét’s alleged affair partner claimed. A few other women reportedly went public with their infidelity stories, and by 2003, Berry had called it quits with her man. “Eric and I have had marital problems for some time now and have tried to work things out together,” Berry said in a statement to EW in October 2003. “However, at this point, I feel we need time apart to reevaluate our union. We ask that you respect our privacy as we are going through this emotional time.”
The reason given was Benét’s sex addiction, but he pushed back on that claim in an interview with ABC News in July 2004. “I am not a sex addict,” Benét said while noting he had never had sex with any of the women. “I am a person who … through a series of emotional events, troubles, challenges, made some really, really stupid, painful mistakes.” It didn’t matter what he said though, Berry wasn’t taking him back.
Berry opened up to Oprah Winfrey in 2004 sharing about her “emotional breakdown” in the wake of his affair disclosures. “The next two weeks of my life, he stayed there, and this vomiting happened, and I found out there was woman after woman after woman after woman after woman,” she explained to Winfrey. “And then I realized he had a sickness.” Describing the moment as “heartbreaking,” Berry thought she was going to be able to “fix it.” In the end, the damage had been done and almost 20 years later, Berry still doesn’t want to hear Benét’s excuses.
