Give our regards to Broadway, remember me in Herald Square. What? Did you think we’d really burst into song? The answer is yes! With Liza Minelli on hand at Radio City Music Hall, the fabulous hall was a Mecca for all things that glitter on Broadway for the Tony Awards.
As for celeb sightings (you know, we’ll get the “important” stuff out of the way and then go to the actual winners)…Brooke Shields dazzled in a black gown, Whoopi Goldberg emceed, Marisa Tomei dazzled in a red strapless dress and “Weeds” star Mary Louise Parker looked stunning.
And the winner is…okay, we admit we only watch awards shows to see what they’re wearing but when it comes to the Tony Awards, you know what?
That’s true talent.
Could you imagine having that much energy, stamina, and talent to perform eight times (eight times! Eight times! Is there an echo in here?) each week in front of a live crowd? Our point exactly. Highlights included Patti LuPone’s tremendous performance for her role in “Gypsy”. LuPone later picked up her second Tony of her career. She was bestowed with her first one in 1980. Now that, my friends is longevity.
We were pulling for “In the Heights” and boy, did they pull through. Although they didn’t convert all their nods into wins, you know what, it matters not. They brought home the award for Best Musical. If you’re fortunate enough to see it like yours truly, you will not be disappointed! As for the back story, Lin Manuel Miranda stars in it but actually wrote it when he was in college. The twenty eight year-old rapped his acceptance speech for best original score. What can we say? The music’s catchy. The salsa beat’s lively. The story’s touching. It’s all about a dream.
