July movies bring the heat

It is officially hot in here, and we’re talking about the inside of the movie theater. SheKnows presents the Summer Movie Preview: Part Two.

After navigating June’s “Iron Man” blockbusters, July offers a few more films for those audiences seeking more than explosions in their films. The success of “Sex and the City” had everyone surprised, which of course, is ridiculous. There’s an audience out there for film’s of all kinds and simply because the thermometer is over 100 degrees, does not mean we don’t like our films with a dialogue and a heart.

Seeing as it is summer, we start our look at July 2008’s movies with, a drunk superhero.

July 2

Hancock
Starring: Will Smith, Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman
Producers are hoping that audiences like their superheroes drunk and with a bad attitude. When Hancock, the titular hero, is Will Smith, something tells us crowds will not be a problem for this picture.

Leading the Fourth of July charge once again is Will Smith who previously found blockbusters on the holiday weekend in the form of “Independence Day” and “Men in Black.”

Also starring Charlize Theron and Jason Bateman as the wise cracking sidekick, this film has real promise. Have you seen the photos of Charlize lifting a truck? Well then, check it out!

Tell No One
Starring: Kristin Scott-Thomas

The star of the “English Patient,” Kristin Scott-Thomas, jumped from Britain to France to join in this delicious oh-so French film that also features François Cluzet, Marie-Josee Croze, Andre Dussollier, Jean Rochefort and Marina Hands.

The story of a husband, who is still in mourning from his wife’s murder eight years prior, who receives an anonymous email with a clue sending him on a journey to the heart of the crime. Or was there a crime? The email contains a live video of his wife walking the streets, very much alive.

July 3

The Wackness
Staring: Josh Peck, Mary Kate Olsen and Sir Ben Kingsley

This film caused waves last summer when it was filming in New York City. It seems there’s a scene where the significantly older Sir Ben Kingsley plants a big kiss on an Olsen twin.

Mary Kate Olsen makes another go at her acting career in this charming tale of life in a Manhattan Bohemian neighborhood during 1994. Note that this time period is before cell phones and iTunes.

It is part of a trend in film this summer to feature a certain green substance as well. Check back at our look of August films for a preview of “Pineapple Express,” which also comically spotlights Mary Kate’s green passion in “The Wacked.”

July 4

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson
Narrated by Johnny Depp, and featuring tributes by Jimmy Carter, George McGovern, Pat Buchanan, Jann Wenner, Tom Wolfe and Jimmy Buffett.

From Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Graydon Carter arrives a probing look into the uncanny life of national treasure and gonzo journalism inventor Dr. Hunter S. Thompson. A fast moving documentary with an iconic soundtrack, the film addresses the major touchstones in Thompson’s life including his intense and ill fated relationship with the Hell’s Angels, his near-successful bid for the office of sheriff in Aspen in 1970, the notorious story behind the landmark Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, his deep involvement in Senator George McGovern’s 1972 presidential campaign, and much more.
