July movies bring the heat

July 18

The Dark Knight
Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Gary Oldman, Maggie Gyllenhaal
Christian Bale dons the Bat suit again with his foe this time, the Joker. By now, everyone knows that Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker will serve as his last on screen and if the previews are any indication, the talented actor went out on a high note.

“The Dark Knight” brings director Christopher Nolan back to continue his steady hand on the revitalized franchise. Also along for the ride are Gary Oldman, Aaron Eckhart and a new love interest, Maggie Gyllenhaal.

Space Chimps
Starring: Monkeys, Andy Samberg and Cheryl Hines

The studio lists this film as an intergalactic comedy. Monkeys in space finds Ham III (voice of Andy Samberg), who is the grungy grandson of the first chimp ever to journey into space. Needless to say, he’s not even close to the old man in ability.

Lou Reed’s Berlin
“Lou Reed’s Berlin” is a documentary chronicling Lou Reed’s five night stint at the famous St. Ann’s Warehouse in Brooklyn, New York. The film is his entire 1973 concept album, “Berline.”

Mama Mia The Movie
Starring: Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth

Donna, played by Meryl Streep, is a single mother who runs a hotel on a Greek island. Her daughter is about to get married and the occasion brings two of her best friends to Greece. Musical enchantment ensues. The question of entire film is who of the three men who show up to her wedding is her father. It seems Donna used to have a “good time” and she can’t really tell Sophie who it is…so what to do? Sing and dance! Insert ABBA soundtrack and you have a winner.

Boy A
“Boy A” is the story of Jack and his role in the murder of another child. As a young man, Jack has spent most of his life in juvenile prisons. As he is released into a world that has drastically changed, he must cope with the boy he was in order to grow into the man he wants to become.

A classic gets updated and Luke Wilson comes back…
