Bet you didn’t think you could spend your Friday night with Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard and ABBA, did you? Add the singing, dancing troupe of Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried and you have yourself a “Mamma Mia!”
In theatres this Friday, the hit musical “Mamma Mia!” brings the story of a young girl (Seyfried) who is searching to find herself through the hopes of finding her real father. Twist: He could be one of three different men (Brosnan, Firth and Skarsgard) whom her mother (Streep) has… slept with. Chaos ensues when, unbeknownst to her mom, all three men are called upon by the young girl to a Greek isle just in time for her wedding.
Judy Craymer, the mind behind “Mamma Mia!” (musical and film), enlisted Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus (ABBA), along with single mother and writer Catherine Johnson to mold the international sensation.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Craymer talks about pairing with Johnson to create the musical.
“She had no track record as a writer of original musicals, but she had a great understanding of music and ABBA songs and a lack of pretension, which was incredibly important. We were both so broke we had nothing to lose.”
The duo was later joined by Phyllida Lloyd, a prominent opera director. “I took Catherine and Phyllida out to dinner the first time we got together, about a year into working on the creative development. And Bjorn. I just prayed they would go with the set menu and not (a la carte) or I couldn’t afford to pay for it.”
From an idea to a phenomenon, “Mamma Mia!” the musical has brought in over 30 million patrons worldwide and an estimated $2 billion in gross ticket sales. Now, the blockbuster’s total take in 12 international markets is a strong $24.3 million.
Well, looks like the last thing these girls will have to worry about is picking up the tab for dinner.
