Happy Birthday Madonna! The material girl turned 50 at home in London today and if the last half-century was any indication of this woman’s innate power to transcend popular culture, the planet is in for quite a ride during the next 50 years.
During her tenure as pop’s reigning queen, Madonna has sold almost 120 million albums and achieved the impossible, selling 40 million singles…and she is not close to finished. Madonna’s latest single with Justin Timberlake and Timbaland is still on the charts.
Fifty years ago on August 16, Madonna Louise Ciccone, arrived in a Detroit hospital. The world has never been the same since. Thank goodness.
Sure, she may dominate headlines for reasons that are beyond her control (well maybe, a married woman shouldn’t leave a married man’s hotel room at 4 a.m.), she has managed to rise above the scandal from the Sex book, her marriage and divorce to Sean Penn and a film career that at best could be called terrible, to remain the most visible female artist in the world. And yes, she is still “happily” married to film director Guy Richie.
Evidence of Madonna’s musical brilliance will be all over the country this fall as she embarks on her next tour appropriately titled, Sticky and Sweet Tour. There is nothing more succulently sonically perfect than Madonna’s music catalog.
