Anne Hathaway ex gets prison

Former boyfriend of actress Anne Hathaway, Raffaello Folliero, was sentenced to four-and-a-half-years in prison today after pleaded guilty to charges of wire fraud, money laundering and conspiracy after claiming to be the CFO of the Vatican in a real estate scam.

Per his attorney’s request, Folliero is likely to be sent to a facility in either Fort Dix, New Jersey or Otisville, New York, under a level of security yet to be determined. In addition he will receive three years of supervised release.

At the sentencing, Folliero said, “The most important thing I want the court to know is I was not raised with bad values…I started off with good intentions, determined to run an honorable business and make everyone proud of me.”

“What I did was wrong and there is no point in making excuses. I will never be able to wash away the shame. I just hope that someday those who have been hurt by my actions will forgive me.”

The indicted con artist was arrested in June and accused of lying to investors while claiming to be the CFO of the Vatican. Folliero had hoped to gain investors’ trust using swindled funds to pay for his lavish lifestyle – including special treats for then-girlfriend Hathaway.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office showed evidence that the monies were used to pay Folliero’s $37,000-a-month rent, medical bills for himself and Hathaway as well as multiple vacations (including a 2005-2006 New Year’s trip to the Dominican Republic with Hathaway and another couple).

The actress was never a suspect in the case and cooperated with the prosecution in their investigation.
