The Joaquin Phoenix quitting Hollywood rumors are true. The Academy Award-nominated actor announced October 29 that he is in fact, retiring.
Phoenix told E! on the red carpet Wednesday night that he was quitting the acting game.
The scene was a benefit for the Association of Hole and the Wall camps – a Paul Newman charity. Phoenix told the network that his final performance will be in this year’s Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow.
“This will be my last performance as an actor. I’m not doing films anymore,” Phoenix says. “I’ve been through that. I’ve done it…I’m dead serious.”
If Phoenix indeed sticks to his plan, he will be leaving behind an impressive film resume at the age of thirty-four. After first gaining notice in TV’s Seven Brides for Seven Brothers in 1982, Phoenix truly came to the public’s consciousness opposite Nicole Kidman in To Die For. When all is said on done, the actor will be most known for his impeccable performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line.
In Gladiator, he earned an Oscar nomination for not only fending off Russell Crowe’s gladiator, but also the actor’s strong presence.
His brother River died young outside Johnny Depp’s Viper Room of a drug overdose. Could this fact have any weight on Joaquin’s decision? Only he knows.
