Slumdog Millionaire sweeps all four categories for which it was nominated at the 2009 Golden Globe Awards.
Slumdog Millionaire, the underdog film about a Mumbai orphan who rises to glory after winning Who Wants to be a Millionaire, won best drama, best director, best screenplay and musical score.”Golden Globes, or the GGs as we very affectionately refer to them — your mad, pulsating affection for our film is much appreciated. Really, deeply appreciated,” says director Danny Boyle.
Kate Winslet finally broke her always-a-bridesmaid streak of five nominations without a win with two awards: best dramatic actress for Revolutionary Road and best supporting actress for The Reader. Revolutionary Road was a special project for Winslet — it reunited her with beloved Titanic costar Leonardo DiCaprio, and was directed by her husband Sam Mendes.”I’ve loved you for 13 years and your performance in this film is nothing short of spectacular,” Winslet gushes to DiCaprio in an emotional acceptance speech. To her husband, she added “Thank you for directing this film, babe, and thank you for killing us every single day and really enjoying us actually being in such horrific pain.”Woody Allen’s Vicky Cristina Barcelona won for best musical or comedy film. Surprisingly shut out were favorites Doubt, Frost/Nixon and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Not surprisingly, Heath Ledger was posthumously awarded best supporting actor for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight. The award was collected by director Christopher Nolan, who said, “All of us who worked with Heath on The Dark Knight accept with an awful mixture of sadness but incredible pride. After Heath passed, you saw a hole ripped in the future of cinema.”But by far the feel-good moment of the evening was Mickey Rourke’s win for The Wrestler. Rourke, who was all but persona non grata in Hollywood as recently as last year, gave a moving performance in a role that mirrored his real life career trajectory and was rewarded with the globe for best actor in a drama.”It’s been a very long road back for me,” Rourke said.
