It was Lindy Hop night on Dancing with the Stars and things really were popping down Hollywood way. The other half of the group took on the sexy, sultry Argentine Tango and it made for a very entertaining night.
Last night’s Dancing with the Stars really marked the dividing line between the contenders and those that don’t have a shot. It’s a double elimination tonight but there are at least four that need to go before this show can move into high gear. Aren’t the group dances coming soon? I’m afraid.
On the bottom for me?
The Steves.
Steve Wozniak attempted to be powerful and serious for this Argentine Tango but it was ridiculous, plodding, sloppy and I’m over the novelty of this guy pretending he can dance.
Then there’s Steve-O and Lacey. This should have been a dynamite combo but it’s time to pull the plug. Maybe it’s Steve’s injuries, maybe not but these two just can’t manage a watchable routine. That makes me sad. I think they’ll be the second couple to leave to night.
Lawrence Taylor and Edyta Sliwinska. They did a sultry Tango that I thought was heavy and lacking in any sex appeal. I fast forward when I see these two — boring!
Holly Madison and Dmitry Chaplin also need a bus pass out of the Dancing with the Stars town after their Argentine Tango. I don’t know if it’s him or her but together there’s nothing happening here. She’s obviously reached her potential and I think she’ll go home tonight.
Wading around in the shallow end of the pool is David Alan Grier and Kym Johnson. They’re Lindy to Bandstand Boogie was really fun and cute but there’s still something uncomfortable about David. He likely won’t be eliminated tonight but he needs to go soon.
Chuck and Julianne: working?
Sitting in the high end of that shallow pool is Chuck Wicks and Julianne Hough. They did a cute Lindy Hop to Summertime Blues that was full of tricks and themed gestures but there’s a spark missing. I think Chuck has some ability but I’m not sure he has anymore to give than what we’re seeing now on Dancing with the Stars.
Shawn Johnson and Mark Ballas fell down a few pegs with their silly, trick-filled Lindy Hop that didn’t wow anyone. Their costumes were unbecoming, the dance was too frenetic. Shawn lost all sense of dance and performance — it was a huge mess from a duo that usually sails through at the top of the pack. Ironic since Shawn was happy to have a fun dance that didn’t require her to act like a grownup. Maybe she didn’t take this week seriously enough.
Kim commands!
On the high end, wow, Lil’ Kim! I barely recognized her.She looks slim and trim and so sexy doing that Argentine Tango with Derek. Trouble is, I don’t see him as sexy so I had difficulty buying into the feel of the dance but that totally wasn’t her fault.
Melissa and Tony wow’d us again with a bouncy and wild Lindy Hop. They got to show off their fun personalities and it was a joy to watch. Tony is one of my favorite pros and I love seeing him with a partner that kicks butt. Straight to the top, you two!
Then there’s Gilles Marini and Cheryl Burke. Not surprising that this Frenchman can pull of the romance but who knew he would make such a powerful Latin lover.
This dance had all the elements, the sex, the sizzle, fast moves, slow moves, they really delivered that struggle that epitomizes this Tango. They got the first 30 out of 30 and I was cheering, after I finished swooning that is.
The biggest surprise was Ty Murray and Chelsie Hightower. Their Lindy Hop to a Big Bad Voodoo Daddy song was their best ever. Ty really got into the character of the dance and he was so fun to watch. Who knew!?
Best dress: Melissa’s pink polka dot flippy dress was adorable. I love her to pieces.
Worst dress: Lacey’s Lindy Hop outfit looked like a badly fitted gym suit from Junior High. Ugh.
Best song choice: David and Kym’s Bandstand Boogie
Worst gimmick: Shawn and Mark spent most of the night in tracksuits, which they removed to reveal equally awful gym clothing. I’m guessing they were playing off her being an Olympic gymnast, but it took away from the dance.
Tune in tonight for the first double elimination of the season along with plenty of music and dance! It’s Dancing with the Stars tonight at 9:00 on ABC.
