Shawn Johnson wins Dancing with the Stars

Apolo Anton Ono told Shawn Johnson that every Olympian who made the Dancing with the Stars final, won the trophy. When I heard that I thought to myself, well not this time. I was wrong. Olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson and partner Mark Ballas did win last night and I am not happy about that at all.

I suppose I should feel better knowing that there was only a one-percent difference between Gilles, who should have won, and Shawn, who did. But frankly, I think second should have gone to Melissa and Tony with Shawn and Mark coming in third. How did America get this so wrong?

While it is true that Shawn had some major breakout dances in the last few weeks, Gilles and Melissa were consistently better throughout the course of the competition. Not that the front runner should always win, but Gilles in particular delivered a strong finish if that’s what we’re using as a basis for the final vote.

Since all of the Dancing with the Stars contestants received a perfect 30 for their final dance, that element didn’t help or hurt anyone. The night before scores were so close, it’s hard to imagine that was a factor. So it all came down to viewer votes.

My editor here at She Knows said when you realize it was the American gold medalist against the Frenchman, and then it was a no brainer. I don’t agree. From the beginning, we thought Gilles would falter simply because he was an unknown. Past seasons have proved that a loyal fan base can take a bad dancer quite far in the competition, but viewers obviously set that bias aside in order to vote for the best dancer of the bunch. So why didn’t that happen at the end? I guess it almost did.

And let’s not forget Melissa and Tony. Remember Melissa came in to the competition at the last minute and she rose to the challenge. From day one, she was gorgeous out on that dance floor. I agree that she lost some spark after the rib injury but she was still so much better than Shawn when it came to grace and elegance on the floor. I’m also surprised that viewers didn’t give the vote to Tony. After all these years, the pros themselves have become stars and Tony, more than Cheryl and Mark, deserved that win or at the very least, second place.

Going on the judges scores over the course of the season alone, Gilles and Cheryl would have won. I’m going to pretend that they did.

That’s it for another season of Dancing with the Stars. Stay right here at SheKnows for complete coverage of So You Think You Can Dance which begins May 21 on Fox.
