Johnny Depp crashes Comic Con

SheKnows is all over Comic Con 2009 and our first explosive news is Johnny Depp crashed the Disney 3D presentation. Depp said five words and left to support his iconic portrayal of the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

Comic Con is clearly a huge event. Depp is a huge star. But what went down inside the San Diego convention center has the makings of pop culture madness.

Not since Comic Con began its only-in-America success story in 1970 has the annual pop culture fan convention created such a buzz in San Diego… Well, at least beyond the appearance of the cast of The Twilight Saga: New Moon visited with SheKnows earlier in the day. After the Twilight three — Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — essentially kicked off the biggest entertainment fan gathering on the west coast, the biggest star in the world did as only he could. Johnny Depp stole the show from the biggest pop culture phenomenon since well… Pirates of the Caribbean.

There were rumors buzzing throughout this Southern California paradise that Johnny Depp, who plays the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, would emerge to discuss another he-was-born-to-play-it role.

Robert Zemeckis and other legendary filmmakers were also gathered at the Disney showcase, but as Depp appeared, a pop culture earthquake was felt larger than any we feel here in Southern California on a regular basis in the last 15 years.

Alice in Wonderland is a new visually stunning live-action adaptation directed by none other than Tim Burton. Burton was set to be the featured speaker of the Disney 3-D panel.

The rumors became instantly confirmed and those gathered in the San Diego Convention Center hall clearly had no idea what was going on in front of them.

Johnny Depp said all of five words. And. Then. Left.

After Comic Con fans watched a custom-made trailer, Tim Burton asked them if they want to meet the imaginary friend who follows the Alice in Wonderland family around. You can guess what happened next: fans went wild and just like that, Depp appeared in a buttoned down shirt along with a fitted black vest.

Depp sauntered up to the microphone and uttered, “Hey, happy to be here.”

Then, it was time for the Depp departure.

The moderator told the crowd that Johnny Depp could possibly reappear later on, so he kindly advised them to be nice to every guy they “see dressed like Jack Sparrow.”

Burton continued by telling the crowd he’s filming an intense fantasy flick which will hit theaters next spring.

SheKnows coverage of Comic Con continues in moments with our full report of the Twilight Saga: New Moon press conference — something that millions want to attend, but only a handful get to walk through the Stephenie Meyer-inspired doors of the San Diego Hilton Bayside.
