It’s nearing the end of summer and time for the perfect last-minute getaway — escape from the daily grind and unwind by the pool, on a warm, sandy beach or wherever your summer vacation (or staycation!) takes you. Regardless of your destination, pack your beach bag with one (or all) of these fabulous books that will make your escape that much sweeter.
Time of My Life by Allison Winn Scotch
Allison Winn Scotch’s New York Times best-selling novel, Time of My Life, poses the ultimate “What if?” What
happens when Jillian Westfield, a woman who seemingly has it all (lovely daughter, handsome husband, beautiful home), wakes up seven years in the past in her ex-job, living with her ex-boyfriend.
Can she fix things this time around? Will she? It’s worth your time to find out. And check out our She Knows
interview with Scotch, in which she dishes on the upcoming movie, her secret life and more.
Barefoot by Elin Hilderbrand
Elin Hilderbrand’s Barefoot is set on Nantucket (as are all of Hildenbrand’s books) and is the perfect beach read. Three women with
secrets and struggles, a 22-year-young man and one long, hot summer. You won’t stop turning the page until you find out how the summer ends.
Mercury in Retrograde by Paula Froelich
A perfect summer chick lit novel with zip, this book is snappy, smart and fresh. Three very different women move into the same SoHo apartment building. You’ll laugh and cry at the hilarious
misadventures of these Manhattan women, especially those of Penelope Mercury.
Along for the Ride by Sarah Dessen
Sarah Dessen has been named the queen of young chick lit, but her appeal and audience stretches beyond teenagers. She is known for her books about that one
boy, that one summer, and Along for the Ride is no exception. Dessen takes you back to your first love and that first time at the beach when summer nights were full of endless
possibilities. And Dessen’s wonderful secondary adult characters (like new mom Heidi in this book) are why adults are now taking the ride along with Dessen.
The Divorce Party by Laura Dave
Laura Dave’s The Divorce Party is one delicious book — and you’ll know why
it’s a must on your summer reading list when you check out our SheKnows review of the book. You won’t be able to put it
down until the cake has been served, and the party is over.
Stay tuned to SheKnows for our upcoming interview with Dave, in which she speaks about the book and the upcoming movie!
Hope in a Jar by Beth Harbison
At first, this book seemed oddly familiar. I had just finished Jennifer Weiner’s new book, Best Friends Forever. Both contain similarities:
Estranged childhood best friends, a 20-year high school reunion where the women meet up again, and flashbacks between when they were friends in high school and the present day where they are not.
Your best hope is with Beth Harbison — her book is witty and realistic where Weiner’s seemed highly unlikely.
