Kate Gosselin puts her brave face back on for tonight’s return of Jon and Kate Plus 8 on TLC.
Next Food Network Star champ!
Congratulations go out to Melissa d’Arabian, a stay-at-home mom from Texas. She’s the latest winner of The Next Food Network Star. Melissa beat out Jeffrey Saad, whom I thought was a lock to win. He
was poised and confident in front of the camera and the way he talked about the food made me hungry. On the other hand, there’s no doubt that there’s a need for a show like Melissa’s. She’s going
to be focusing on inexpensive meals for the family. It’s called Ten Dollar Dinners with Melissa d’Arabian and it begins August 9, at 12:30 pm on The Food Network.
Last night, I also tuned in for the premiere of ABC’s new scifi drama series, Defying Gravity. The series follows a group of astronauts on a six-year mission to explore our universe. The
show is a mix of flashbacks showing how their relationships began and developed, along with after launch footage where they’ve already been forced to deal with a huge glitch in the mission. It was
a little slow to start, but they’ve dangled a few carrots that I want to see through, so I’ll be tuning in when the show moves to it’s regular time, Sundays at 10:00 on ABC.
Now let’s take a look at what’s on tonight.
Tonight’s top TV picks:
Jon & Kate Plus 8 (9:00 TLC)
Jon & Kate are back in all new episodes but don’t expect to see them sitting on the couch together spouting off their confessionals. Going forward, the cameras will be capturing Jon and Kate as
they go about their separate lives but will we see the new loves in Jon’s life? The producers say they’ll make that decision on a “case by case” basis. Whatever it’s worth, we at SheKnows are
pulling for Kate.
Sugarland: Live on the Inside (8:00 ABC)
They may be a country band, but anyone who loves good music will enjoy a Sugarland concert. It’s Sugarland’s first TV special and they’ll be performing their hits Stay and All I Want
to Do and many more.
The Closer (9:00 TNT)
Bruce Davidson guests on
tonight’s The Closer as a man who confesses to the murder of a doctor, but Brenda suspects he may be covering for his schizophrenic son. Also on her plate, a visit from her mother and
troublesome niece played by Kyra Sedgwick’s real-life daughter (with actor Kevin Bacon) Sosie Bacon.
Ultimate Cake-off (10:00 TLC)
If you love Food Network’s Challenge, you’ll love TLC’s newest cake competition series, Ultimate Cake-off. The series premieres tonight with the world’s greatest cake artists
competing for $10,000 and the title of Ultimate Cake Decorator. Best of all, watching the series is 100-percent calorie free.
More to Love (9:00 Fox)
In case you missed it, Fox is re-airing the premiere of their new hit dating series, More to Love. 36-year-old former college football player, Luke Conley is looking for a woman who is
intelligent, down-to-earth and round in all the right places. Tonight hell meet twenty of them and then the fun begins. It’s the dating show with a little more to give, it’s Fox’s More to
Love.
News and notable
HBO has renewed Hung, Entourage and True Blood.
Planet Green is in development on a TV series about volunteers who guard the buffalo at Yellowstone National Park. Yes, really. They’re also working on a show about an organic bakery and one about
a city couple who move to the country to try their hand at farming. Lucille Ball and the egg Tango, anyone?
Marie Osmond was on tap to host her own talk show this fall but the series has been canceled due to economic reasons.
Let’s Make a Deal will return to television, filling the daytime spot that will open up when Guiding Light goes off the air in September after a 72-year radio and TV run.
