If you’re a huge fan of Good Morning America and women’s power overall, you’ll be excited to hear Diane Sawyer will become the next anchor of ABC World News when Charles Gibson retires.
The 66-year-old Gibson will retire at the end of this year. The 63-year-old Sawyer was the only person ever considered to take over the helm, according to ABC.
What is the significance? When Sawyer takes over, two of the three network evening anchors will be women. You may recall Katie
Couric broke that barrier three years ago when she joined CBS.
As for where this leaves Good Morning America? Viewers and industry experts both agree that Sawyer’s seat will be hard to fill. As for the questions, perhaps they will promote the
program’s news anchor, Chris Cuomo who also happens to be the son of the former New York governor Mario Cuomo.
Another option is to look “externally” in the same way that Katie was replaced on Today with Meredith Vieira.
The path to evening news correspondent is not an easy one as Sawyer began her television career as a weather girl! The former 60 Minutes correspondent has interviewed every president since
the first George Bush. Impressed yet? She’s co-hosted Primetime Live and 20/20. The morning host has interviewed A-listers like the late Michael Jackson and has also done documentaries on poverty in Appalachia.
Currently both Sawyer and Gibson are not granting interviews however in a statement, Sawyer said, “There is no one like Charlie Gibson and it is an enormous honor to be asked to join the
terrific broadcast he and the great team of journalists have built at World News.”
