Ellen DeGeneres is joining American Idol as the hit show’s fourth judge. After a summer of auditions where the fourth judges’ chair, left vacant by Paula Abdul, has been filled with a list of guest stars from Joe Jonas to Victoria Beckham.
DeGeneres becoming part of the American Idol family is somewhat out of left field. The talk show host and funnywoman did not have much to add
dance-wise to her guest stint this summer on So You Think You Can Dance, but her humorous observations were priceless.
DeGeneres’ American Idol casting was a shock to most of Hollywood.
American Idol judges Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and
Kara DioGuardi have a cohort in Ellen who will certainly fill the “nice” judge roll. As a non-singer, DeGeneres will have difficulty offering sonic criticism and most likely will keep
to performance style, personal style with a few funny comments tossed in the mix.
Ellen’s a busy woman. Between serving as the host of her self-titled talk show currently enjoying still-robust ratings, she also is a
face of Covergirl.
Now, with her American Idol digs in place, DeGeneres will be ever-present in popular culture for the entire 2009-2010 television season.
