As the fashion world mourned the death of designer Alexander McQueen yesterday, in the spirit of the show must go on, his death did not deter Fashion Week from continuing its efforts to educate the public about women’s heart health. Although the McQueen show was cancelled in light of his suicide, celebrities sparkled in the runway in honor of heart health.
The Heart Truth is a national awareness campaign for women about heart disease. Sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and part of the National Institutes of Health, US Department of Health and Human Services — the purpose is to bring attention to heart health.
Heart disease is the number one killer among women and every minute a woman dies from a cardiovascular event.
Twenty celebrities including Kim Kardashian, Felicity Huffman, Klum, Jordin Sparks and Kimora Lee participated in the 2010 Red Dress Collection Fashion Show in Bryant Park.
The red dress is the national symbol for women and heart disease awareness. As the volume was cranked up to Bad Romance by Lady Gaga, I’m Every Woman and the theme from the Sex and the City: the Movie, the spirited crowd cheered on celebs like Elisabeth Hasselbeck, Robin Roberts, Valerie Harper, Joan Collins and Bethenny Frankel.
Project Runway host Heidi Klum told Fox411, “I think it is very important for women if they can to make a splash. So for me, all the beautiful women that are here today to walk the Red Dress fashion show, have a red dress on and talk about something that is important for us women…is hopefully helping some women out there.”
