It’s a funny thing about living in Manhattan. As one huge event like Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is in full swirl, yet another big event is ready to kick up its heels — or in this case, paws. February 15 kicks off the Westminster Kennel Club’s 134th dog show, airing February 15 and 16 at 8 pm on USA.
At Madison Square Garden all the buzz will be about the dogs. Individual breed judging will take place each day between 8 am and 6 pm.
As entry was tight and limited to only 2,500 dogs, all hound, toy, non-sporting and herding breeds and varieties will be judged February 15.
February 16’s broadcast brings all sporting, working, terrier breeds and other varieties to be judged.
The coveted award, Best in Show, will also be announced at the end of the evening.
It’s hard to believe the Westminster Kennel Club has a history dating back to 1877! The show that began to showcase purebred dogs has
now become known as America’s Dog Show.
The very first show back in the day showcased 1,201 dogs at Gilmore’s Garden, the same very spot where Madison Square Garden stands today!
Westminster has survived power outages, snowstorms, the Great Depression, two World Wars, and a tugboat strike that threatened to shut down the city. In fact, this is our nation’s
second-longest continuously held sporting event. The one that trumps it is the Kentucky Derby by only a year.
And although many celebrities are attached to their pooches, canine lovers will probably not see any celebs enter their pets in this year’s contest.
However, previous years of the Westminster Kennel Club’s show included pooches from financier JP Morgan, the Queen of England, and even the czar of Russia!
