Whether the latest chapter in Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series is worth buying on DVD and Blu-ray when The Twilight Saga: New Moon debuts is irrelevant. Millions of fans await the opportunity to witness the Edward-versus-Jacob volley for Bella’s heart over and over.
As SheKnows said in our New Moon theatrical review, “[New Moon] keeps faithful to Meyer’s literary saga, but what is so successful about the cinematic representation of New Moon is how the theme of love permeates. When Bella discovers that the only way she can be around Edward is to push herself beyond comfortable limits… she sees Jacob in a new light… This is a terrific film.”
That alone makes purchasing the DVD or Blu-ray of New Moon worth it. Yet, in the two-disc DVD set that we reviewed, a bounty of extras make New Moon worthy of adding to your home video collection.
In New Moon, audiences find Bella and Edward enjoying their life together, madly in love. A fateful accident at Bella’s birthday party changes everything, however, and sends Edward away from Bella believing that this is the only way to keep her safe.
Wolf-walking in is Jacob. Bella’s old friend and mysteriously now-gorgeous Jacob tries to fill the massive hole left in Bella’s heart by Edward’s exit.
The three main actors — Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson — illustrate again why their casting was so crucial to bringing the beloved Twilight franchise to the big screen. It’s hard to believe that Lautner was almost sent packing. His take on Jacob in Twilight2 honestly makes the film.
DVD review: New Moon mania
Twilight fans will undoubtedly purchase the home video, but they also should be pleased with what Summit Entertainment has included alongside chapter two of Twilight.
When director Chris Weitz took over for Catherine Hardwicke, the Twilight nation took a breath. After seeing Weitz’s work with Meyer’s iconic story, his hand was the perfect touch for New Moon.
His take on each scene and his invaluable background information is a priceless look into the mentality of filming of the Twilight series. The commentary of director Weitz and editor Peter Lambert feeds the fire of curiosity within every Twi-hard.
It has become almost standard for home video packages to include making-of documentaries. The Twilight Saga: New Moon DVD includes six completely different takes on bringing the Twilight Saga to life on screen, and they rank right up there with the movie itself.
SheKnows could not have been more excited to see the bonus feature of Muse rehearsing their soundtrack song. Meyer used the band’s music as a personal soundtrack while writing the Twilight series, so we were expecting a little more insight into the Muse and Meyer connection. But hey, it’s Muse performing… we’ll take it!
Also featured are three music videos from Mute Math (in a hysterical and rocking video), Death Cab for Cutie (with their New Moon theme) and former San Diego DJ-turned-LA-singer-songwriter Anya Marina. All three are great, but Mute Math takes the cake for one of the most original music videos we’re seen in some time.
