Moore’s moved to action
SheKnows: Julianne, you are a very busy and in-demand, extremely talented actress, you have so much to give, what was it about the Children’s Health Fund that you wanted to devote time to?
Julianne Moore: It’s interesting, one of the things I get asked a lot by journalists is, “as a mother…as a mother…as a mother, how do you feel about this, I have two children myself, but honestly, my experience has been shaped more as a child. I grew up in a military family and you go from place to place. And one of the things that you learn is that we don’t all have the same access to the same services and education or really, standard of living in the Untied States. There really is a change from state to state depending on what kind of tax bracket that particularly county is living in, so that made a huge impression on me as a child. A lot of things that I do, my interest in healthcare, poverty and kids education, have been really shaped by the way I grew up.
SheKnows: Karen, what does is it like and what does it mean to have someone like Julianne on board?
Karen Redlener: It’s an incredible honor, really to have Julianne spend her time and bringing her fame to help us get attention for the health care issues that we have been working on for so many years. It makes a huge difference to us.
Children’s healthcare: your call to action
SheKnows: What would you each like readers of this interview to do if they are so moved to help beyond visiting Clorox’s Facebook page? What other calls to action would you like from SheKnows readers?
Julianne Moore: I just toured the mobile health facility and it’s wonderful. It’s absolutely gorgeously maintained. It’s completely up to date. It’s a terrific facility. I know how much they cost. It is $400,000. That is a lot of money. In some people’s world, it’s not. That’s something that some people banding together than participate in, that is the main thing.
Karen Redlener: They can certainly make a donation. This is a program that is funded through private donations and corporate donations. It all comes from people who are interested in this program. If anyone wants to contribute directly (laughs), that would be fantastic! That really makes a huge difference.
SheKnows: We’ve heard all the news about preventative healthcare, and for $400,000, the savings over time would be exponentially huge.
Julianne Moore: Absolutely, one of the things is: there is so much we take for granted in giving our kids preventative healthcare. Karen was saying 30-percent of children in New York City suffer from asthma. If that’s left untreated, there are really serious repercussions including death. Where, if you put a child on a regular preventive care program, it’s really something that can be maintained easily.
