Vanessa Williams joins Desperate Housewives

by

Ugly Betty‘s Queen of Mean is taking on the Desperate Housewives cul-de-sac as a “wicked new housewife!”

“It’s official,” Williams posted on her website. “I’m moving to Wisteria Lane to join the cast of Desperate Housewives for its seventh season!”

Williams will play a housewife who’s sure to shake things up in the neighborhood and wreak havoc in the lives of the women of Wisteria Lane, according to a statement from the show. No doubt!

Word was series creator Marc Cherry has been on the lookout for someone to fill Edie’s shoes since he killed the sexy vixen off. Needless to say, the former Wilhelmina Slater fits the bill. On Ugly Betty, she epitomized the campy villain we love to hate and her energy should fit right into Wisteria Lane’s soapy scene.

“I’m a big fan of Vanessa’s work and I’m so excited that she’ll be moving into the neighborhood next season to cause trouble in all the ladies’ lives,” Cherry told TV Guide.

The new arrival is not, however, moving into Susan’s old house with Paul (Mark Moses).

As seen in the big Desperate Housewives finale this weekend, Mary Alice’s devious widower has moved back onto the block. There’s chatter that a big name actress will play his hot new wife and Cherry tells TV Guide he’ll be the center of the season seven mystery, while Williams’ character will create havoc of another kind.

The Ugly Betty alum is set to wrap her run in Sondheim on Sondheim on Broadway this June before joining Teri Hatcher‘s Susan, Felicity Huffman’s Lynette, Marcia Cross’ Bree and Eva Longoria Parker’s Gabrielle on the block.

We should see most of the residents back for season seven, except for two biggies. Kyle MacLachlan has called it quits, with his character Orson walking out on Bree in the finale. We may see him for an episode or two next season, but just to wrap things up. Then, of course, John Barrowman’s Patrick was tricked into blowing himself up, so we won’t be seeing him again!
