The summer movie season is half over, which means from Shrek Forever After to Sex and the City 2 hitting Dubai to that little indie flick about vampires and werewolves — Eclipse — it’s time to take a look at how this season’s most anticipated films have done so far.
According to Chad Hartigan from Exhibitor Relations, expectations for this summer’s movie season have been pretty weak with most films predicted to meet just mid-level grosses.
However, the exceptions will more than likely come from Eclipse, which raked in around $30 million from its opening midnight sales on June 30 alone, and possibly the Christopher Nolan directed Inception, which opens July 16.
Hartigan points to Toy Story 3, which has grossed $240 million just a couple of weeks into its run, and the remake of The Karate Kid, which has taken in a total of $150 million thus far, as films that have done well at the summer’s halfway point.
As for this summer’s disappointments, Shrek Forever After hasn’t exactly overwhelmed with its gross of $230 million since late May, but the ogre didn’t do as badly as the Prince of Persia or Sex and the City 2, which only raked in roughly $90 million each. The highly anticipated Iron Man 2 did just enough to not be qualified as a disappointment.
The biggest surprise of the summer so far has been the strong showing of The Karate Kid, as well as the extremely poor showing of comic book adaptation Jonah Hex, which has only grossed a little over $9 million as of last weekend.
This summer has yet to see how The Last Airbender, Despicable Me and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice will do, but can anything really touch the force of nature that is Eclipse?
