The Fourth of July is usually a time for bustling outdoor activity, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do inside on the big and small screens. From Eclipse and The Last Airbender in theaters to World Cup Soccer and a Mad Men marathon on TV, the 4th of July weekend is exploding with entertainment.
New in theatres for the 4th of July is M Night Shyamalan’s live action 3D flick The Last Airbender, Love Ranch in limited release (check out our exclusive clip!) about a married couple who opened the first legal brothel in Nevada starring Helen Mirren, and for indie lovers, I Hate Luv Storys, about a jaded assistant director who works on Indian romance films and is forced to work with a production designer.
In case you haven’t heard, The Twilight Saga: Eclipsealso debuted this week, but if you’re not up to battling the teenage crowds for Eclipse, then maybe God of Vampires, about a professional killer whose latest target turns out to be a vampire, will satisfy your bloodlust.
Sports fans who are staying close to home will have plenty to choose from on TV as World Cup soccer continues over the weekend on ABC and ESPN, The Tour de France begins on July 3 on Versus, and the Wimbledon Women’s and Men’s Finals air on NBC Saturday and Sunday respectively. If that’s not enough action, then there’s always the oddly fascinating 2010 Coney Island Hot Dog Eating Contest airing at noon on ESPN.
Fireworks lovers who don’t love the crowds can catch the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular at 10 pm on July 4 on CBS or the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at 9 pm on NBC the same night.
If you have Monday off, from Mad Men on AMC toThe Golden Girlson Hallmark, there is a marathon of some sort on virtually every channel.
