Eva Mendes: The Other Guys interview

by

Eva’s everywhere

SheKnows: With that variety of films, that’s how you get to play.

Eva Mendes: Exactly. You know, I want more variety. I’m dying to work with the Coen brothers. I’m dying to work with them [laughs]! I’m dying to work with Mike Leigh. The way he works is exactly what I would love to get into next. I’d love to do a real tear-jerker drama, like any one of Mike Leigh’s films. Name one, any of them, and they are my favorites. Truth and Lies is just painfully great. It’s so beautiful.

SheKnows: What an amazing film. I hear he runs a very free set in terms of improv. Even in a dramatic sense, he encourages it.

Eva Mendes: You see, he isn’t doing it for profit. That’s so up my alley.

SheKnows: You’ve worked with Mark Wahlberg before, Nicolas Cage twice. It normally is kind of rare in Hollywood to star more than once with someone in a movie…

Eva Mendes: Sam Jackson! Will Ferrell! Denzel Washington!

SheKnows: Is it nice? Is there a comfort level to repeating co-stars?

Eva Mendes: The biggest compliment anyone could give me is wanting to work with me again, because that means they get me and get my work ethic. They know when I show up, I’ll show up 100-percent. I’m very dedicated. That makes me feel really good about myself. These are people that I respect who want to work with me again. They don’t say, “Oh, that Mendes, no, no, no!” [Laughs]

SheKnows: What most impressed you about Mark on The Other Guys?

Eva Mendes: His comedic ability and his ability to stay focused. Even in that dinner scene, he stayed fully in character. He stayed with that, “No, really. Who is this woman? Really, who is she?” He just did not believe that I was Will Ferrell’s wife. It was hysterical. It’s very difficult to do. The temptation would be to ham it up, but he stayed true to his character and I think the results were amazing — just so funny.

SheKnows: Well, he’s got a real softness to all his portrayals that would lend itself to the comedic elements of this role. You seem completely unsurprised at his comic ability.

Eva Mendes: I think Mark’s such a talent. We are constantly talking about doing things together. I would love to do a real drama with him. I would love to get into a real onscreen fight with Mark Wahlberg. Then, of course, we’d have to do a make-up scene [laughs].

Eva, Inc

SheKnows: That would be rough. Tell us about Last Night, your next film coming up.

Eva Mendes:Last Night is an amazing movie. I’m so excited for people to see it. It’s from this female director X Tangent — such a great film. Keira (Knightley) is such a talent, she’s incredible. This girl is so incredibly talented. You go down the check list. A lot of people don’t know she’s funny. She’s obviously gorgeous. She has depth. She has incredible dramatic ability. She’s so incredibly beautiful that it’s unbelievable. Her face is not just beautiful, she has an unconventional beauty. She just stands on her own. I cannot say enough amazing things about her. She backs all of that up with her talent. And in this film, it’s the best acting audiences have ever seen from her. I’m so glad you asked me about that film! It’s a great film and I’m really glad that it is a woman putting it out. I want to see more women out there behind the cameras. Actually, I have to tell you, I’m directing my first short film.
