The Expendables won first place at the box office again. The Twilight spoof Vampires Suck apparently doesn’t suck, since it came in at a close second. Eat Pray Love slipped at the weekend box office as the new releases fumbled.
Sly Stallone’s summer blockbuster TheExpendables refused to back down the weekend of August 20. With a $16.5 million pull, TheExpendables maintained the top spot and raised its total take so far to $64.9 million.
The Twilight inspired parody Vampires Suck came in at a surprising second, with $12.2 million. Take into account the flick’s midweek debut and the film has earned $18.6 million, so far. Apparently, folks are ready to laugh at the Twilight phenom!
Eat Pray Lovecame in on the heels of Vampires Suck, getting bumped to third. The much-hyped Julia Roberts movie based on the bestseller continues to have middling numbers, bringing in $12 million this past weekend.
New releases fail to find audiences
A few new releases entered the fray, but none with stunning numbers.
The comedy Lottery Ticket, which starsBow Wow and Ice Cube, came in fourth with $11.1 million, but this week’s other new releases, The Switch, Nanny McPhee Returns and Piranha 3D didn’t make the top five.
Piranha 3D tried to take a bite out of fifth place, but was beaten out by The Other Guys and landed in sixth. The Other Guys brought in $10.1 million to Piranha 3D’s $10 million. Definitely a close call!
Nanny McPhee Returnstook seventh with $8.3 million; while Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman’s The Switch premiered in eighth place with only $8.1 million.
Jennifer Aniston’s mug is known for selling magazines, but her draw in the theaters seems to be declining. Her recent summer flick The Bounty Hunter opened at $20.7 million, while 2006’s The Break-Up premiered at $39.2 million. Aniston’s upcoming sexy and stoner roles may be just what she needs to shake things up.
Inception stays in the game, bringing in $7.6 million for ninth place, and Scott Pilgrim vs the World takes tenth place with $5 million.
Next week introduces an interesting crew of competitors. Takers and The Last Exorcism are set to premiere, but the one to watch is a big return. Having already broken the record as highest-grossing movie in Hollywood history, Avatar comes back to theaters for more.
