There was a time when Glee star Jane Lynch could walk into a party and only the hardcore Christopher Guest fans would recognize her. That was before Glee and vile Sue Sylvester landed. Needless to say, when Lynch walked into a recent Fox party, SheKnows was front and center!
With Gleeset to return to Fox on Tuesday, September 21, here’s what Jane Lynch had to say about the new season, her fantastically villainous character, all the attention she’s getting and being out and married to Lara Embry.
Jane Lynch talks!
SheKnows: What can we expect from Sue this season on Glee?
Jane Lynch: I have a new focus for my anger, which is a female football coach who actually has a heart. I get in there and try to crush it. [She] is trying to find her way with the guys and get respect from them and, of course, I am thwarting her at every step. I am out to destroy. I find her Achilles heel and am relentless.
SheKnows: Will that distract Sue from her vendetta against Will?
Jane Lynch: We kind of join forces, but he is such a wuss. He is never able to go in there with the velocity I have.
SheKnows: Why do you think Sue works as a character?
Jane Lynch: Because she is so evil that it is comic. She is not dangerous. She is a warrior and everywhere she looks, she is looking for trouble.
SheKnows: Is she a bad person?
Jane Lynch: No. I think that is why people can like her. She is in her own movie.
SheKnows: Did you ever stop and think that maybe you were on your way to creating a classic TV villain?
Jane Lynch: I am greatly flattered that I got to put on that track suit.
SheKnows: When fans meet you, do they want you to be mean to them?
Jane Lynch: No, they just laugh and say, “You are so mean!” Nobody is afraid of her. She is a benign danger.
SheKnows: You’re so nice: Do you have trouble connecting to the mean?
Jane Lynch: I am not that nice. I don’t have to dig that deep. She is there. You know when you are in a bad mood and you are looking for everything to be wrong? She lives that way.
SheKnows: What will you wish to see for Sue this year?
Jane Lynch: I don’t know. Any time I have a wish for what I want, they come up with something so much better than my imagination can conceive.
SheKnows: Was Olivia Newton-John your idea?
Jane Lynch: That’s a good one. No, that was Ryan’s [Murphy, creator], but we kind of bonded over how much we loved her. We met her songwriter at a restaurant one night. We said, “Olivia Newton-John!” He said, “I am going to get her for you,” and he did.
SheKnows: Are there plans for you to sing again this year?
Jane Lynch: I hope so.
SheKnows: Do you have a dream celebrity you would like the show to do a tribute to?
Jane Lynch: Joni Mitchell, but I don’t know how you would do that. I am an old folkie. Or James Taylor and Carole King. Wouldn’t it be great if we did an entire Tapestry episode?
SheKnows: How does it feel to have your own Madame Tussauds wax figure?
Jane Lynch: That is so unreal. This is so unreal! I don’t know what to say. She is actually wearing the red track suit that I wore and they made me a new one.
SheKnows: What is the biggest splurge you have indulged in since getting the show?
Jane Lynch: I had a long distance relationship until I got married, [so] flying first class to Sarasota, Florida was my biggest splurge.
SheKnows: What is the best part of being married?
Jane Lynch: Waking up with someone you love and spending every day with them and having a child. I love her. She is the best.
SheKnows: What was it like to be honored by LA’s Outfest this summer?
Jane Lynch: What a great festival. I didn’t expect to be as moved as I was. The whole thing and just the energy of that festival has been so great, so fresh and so fun. It is free. It was great to be honored by them.
SheKnows: Is Sue Sylvester straight or gay?
Jane Lynch: She would be whatever it takes to get power.
SheKnows: What do you think of the Brittany and Santana kiss?
Jane Lynch: You are asking the gay questions, right? [Laughs] I think they are sexually malleable.
SheKnows: We hear Sue is writing her memoirs: We should get some fun back story there!
Jane Lynch: I can’t wait to read them. Anything in the hands of Ian Brennan (Glee writer-co-executive producer) is going to be brilliant. I am looking forward to that.
