If you need a last minute gift for the girl who has everything this holiday season, get her a book. And not just any book will do. Get her a book that was so fabulous it was made into a movie. And because we all know that the book is nearly always better than the big screen, make sure she promises to read it before adding it to her Netflix queue.
Here’s a quick and easy guide to our fave chick lit books that have been made into movies.
#1 Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin
Okay, so this movie based on the Emily Giffin smash isn’t officially out yet. But we are so excited to see it that it’s at the top of our list. Something Borrowed is one of our fave books ever and now it’s being made into a movie starring Kate Hudson and John Krasinski.
We are so there on opening night and know many of you chick lit lovers will be too. In our minds, Miss Emily Giffin can do no wrong and neither can you if you give Giffin to your besties and women on your shopping list.
#2 Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding
One of the books that made chick lit a household name, Bridget Jones’s Diary, was made into a fantastic movie starring the fab Renee Zellweger
(remember how chubby she got to make the role authentic?) and the impossibly handsome Hugh Grant. The result? Cinema perfection! Will Renee be packing on those pounds again for the third installment? Let’s hope so. Meantime, head back to the original book and fall in love all over again.
#3 The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
Another fantastic adaptation of a fantastic book. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep made innocent Andy and evil Miranda jump off the page. Even better? It made us want to read the book again (and we did).
In case your friends missed the book and went straight for the flick, back up and give them this book to curl up on the couch with over the holidays.
It’s wickedly fun. And for an added bit of fun, add in Weisberger’s newest book released this fall — The Last Night at Chateau Marmont.
#4 The Nanny Diaries by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus
We were so lucky that another of our all-time fave chick lit books was made into a movie and it starred the always lovely and super hot Scarlett Johansson (and can we just say for the record, it’s so upsetting about the Scarlett and Ryan breakup! If she can’t hang on to the sexiest man alive, who can?).
We’re hoping that this Hollywood breakup goes smoothly but also, more importantly, that Hollywood makes a sequel from McLaughlin and Kraus’ second novel, Nanny Returns. We’re crossing our fingers and you can cross someone off your list by getting the Nanny books for any chick lit lover.
#5 Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
Julia Roberts dazzled in the adaptation of Elizabeth Gilbert’s blockbuster memoir that had us all wanting to drop everything and set out on our own spiritual journey around the world.
Just in case there’s someone on your list who has not read Eat Pray Love, now’s the time to give them the gift so they can channel their inner Julia and escape for the holidays.
