Jack Black chats Gulliver’s Travels

Jack Black: Class clown

SheKnows: So, I’m assuming that you’re kind of a silly person in real life.

Jack Black: I do have a silly side, yes.

SheKnows: Do you see any signs of that in your kids, other than the normal, shoving crayons up the nose and eating dirt?

Jack Black: Yeah. My boys, especially my oldest, he loves to ham it up. He’s the real performer in our household. He loves the attention and a captive audience. If you come over, you will see. He will entertain you.

SheKnows: When choosing the song War, did you get to choose it for the end of the movie?

Jack Black: Actually, the writer that we hired came up with that on his own. He thought that would be a cool song to sing to the little Lilliputians. And I just love that song, and was stoked when I got to do it. But, I can’t take credit for thinking of it.

Gulliver’s Travels: 3d talk

SheKnows: How did you guys decide to do Gulliver’s Travels in 3D?

Jack Black: You know, somewhere around the time that Avatar came out and made $2 billion, the idea was floated to us [laughs]. And, you know, it made a lot of sense for our movie because the fantasy/adventure genre is just a good fit, especially with the big, epic scenes with, you know, the Blefuscian Armada and the cannonballs. And just looking at a giant in 3D is cool.

SheKnows: Was it shot in 3D or was that added afterwards?

Jack Black: It was added in after. But, you know, there’s a stigma. Lately, everyone — that’s everyone — wants to know, if it was filmed in 3D. Because if it’s not shot in 3D, then it’s not real. But, all the billionaires are pooh-poohing it because they want to keep the 3D magic for themselves. I hate to show the guy behind the curtain. But, some of the best scenes in Avatar in terms of the 3D effect — that was all done in post.

Gulliver’s Travels: Living in Lilliput

SheKnows: Now that you have kids, would you want to live in Lilliput? Don’t you think it is a simpler life? They were able to just think of things in the simplest way.

Jack Black: Yeah. In a way, it’s an ideal society. But, as you said, everyone takes your word as truth. That’s why he’s able to get away with making up this elaborate story about himself, because everyone just says, “Yeah, he said it. It must be true.” But, it’s a fun place for an adventure. But, no, I wouldn’t want to live there. You know why? Because it’s lonely being a giant. There’s no one big enough to give you a hug.
