2011 promises to be a big year in film. We’ve got superheroes like Green Hornet, Green Lantern, Captain America and Thor, a return to popular franchises with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 and Scream 4 and the famous vampire baby in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 1. Save your pennies. You’re going to be in a dark theater a lot next year. Here’s what we’re looking forward to most.
Movies 2011: Winter
The Green Hornet: Seth Rogen as a superhero? Sounds unlikely, but then, this particular crime fighter has never been super serious.
Rogen famously slimmed down for the role in The Green Hornetand it’s been getting very positive early buzz. I’ve actually seen this one and it’s pretty darn funny. [January 14]
Red Riding Hood: Amanda Seyfried (who clearly hasn’t had a day off in the past few years…she’s in everything) stars in this more adult retelling of the classic fairy tale.
Early shots from the film are stunning and it looks promising as a gothic romance. [March 11]
Sucker Punch: Director Zack Snyder’s latest offering about a girl in a mental asylum who escapes into a dream world. Along with her fellow inmates, she battles dragons, robots and faceless soldiers to find the keys to escape her captors. I was on the set for this one and it looks gorgeous. Well, Snyder is hardly known for doing visually bland films and we’re sure Sucker Punchwill be dazzling. [March 25]
Movies 2011: Spring
Scream 4: Ghostface is back after all these years…oh, and Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette as well.
We can’t wait to see what’s happened to everyone in the Scream series and what horror legend Wes Craven has dreamed up this time. [April 15]
Thor: A superhero and a god (easy to see why they cast Chris Hemsworth) battle the forces of evil in this latest chapter in the Marvel lead-up to the ultimate comic book film, The Avengers. The film also stars Sir Anthony Hopkins and the newly-pregnant Natalie Portman. [April 27]
Movies 2011: Summer
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides: Well, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is the fourth film in the series and Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley won’t be returning, but who can resist Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow? Looks like we’ll be seeing pirates for Halloween for a few more years. [May 20]
Super 8: I’d love to describe this one, but…I can’t. The film from J.J. Abrams has managed to keep its plot under wraps. From the few things out there, we can assume there will be aliens and ice pops. No, really. Check out www.scariestthingieversaw.com. Let us know if you can figure it out. [June 8]
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2:The last Harry Potterfilm? Oh, say it isn’t so! We’re about to see the final chapter in the saga of the boy wizard and Voldemort. Yes, I’m not afraid to say his name. Not only will the film be wildly popular, but it’s about to leave room for the next addictive kids’ franchise. Any guesses as to what it will be? [July 15]
Green Lantern: Superhero fans have been drooling over this offering from DC Comics. Non-comic book geeks wouldn’t mind checking out Ryan Reynolds shirtless in Green Lantern. (Watch the trailer. You’re welcome.) Though fanboys haven’t been exactly thrilled with the CGI costume and mask that was revealed this summer, the buzz has been pretty positive. Still, my favorite Green Lantern will always be Daffy Duck. [July 17]
Captain America: The First Avenger: Comic giant Marvel film keeps them coming with the classic Captain America. We don’t have a lot to go on, but the costume looks phenomenal. This one should blow up at the box office. [July 22]
Cowboys & Aliens:Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford star in this Western with…aliens? Well, why the heck not? You’ve got Jon Favreau directing, the awesome Sam Rockwell and Tron: Legacy’sOlivia Wilde. And hey, you really can’t go wrong with Han Solo and James Bond. [July 29]
Movies 2011: Fall
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn: Part 1: The long awaited next chapter in the Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn, will finally arrive on a chilly night across America in November. This one will feature the famous wedding and at long last, the sex scene. You know what comes next, don’t you? Baby vampire for Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart! [November 18]
The Muppets: Jason Segel has been working on this one forever and we can’t wait to see our favorite characters again! The film also stars Amy Adams. And Kermit, and Miss Piggy and Gonzo…is it November yet? [November 23]
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo: Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know about Stieg Larsson’s posthumous novel about a damaged computer hacker being turned into a film…again. The 2009 film starring Noomi Rapace has been nominated for a bunch of awards. The upcoming David Fincher version stars Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoopromises to be quite a spectacle. [December 21]
