After being dropped from the History channel and passed on by Showtime, Starz and FX, the controversial miniseries The Kennedys has found a home on the independent cable network ReelzChannel.
The Kennedys eight-part miniseries has had a rough start, however, no publicity is bad publicity — and ReelzChannel is betting on that.
The controversial film, starring Katie Holmes and Greg Kinnear, was originally slated to air on the History channel on January 7, but was pulled after pressure from the Kennedy clan, who called it “vindictive.”
The History channel released a statement, saying, “After viewing the final product in its totality, we have concluded this dramatic interpretation is not a fit for the History brand.”
After being passed over by other networks, the four-year-old independent cable channel owned by Hubbard Communication picked it up.
ReelzChannel is available in 60 million homes nationwide on services including Dish Network, DirecTV, AT&T, Time Warner Cable, Comcast and Charter Communications. No word how much they paid for the miniseries which cost $30 million to make.
“One of the benefits of being an independent network is that you can be an independent voice and you don’t have to worry about corporate pressure or political pressure. This is a project that deserves to be seen,” Hubbard said.
The first two episodes of The Kennedys will air April 3, and the remaining six will air on successive nights that week. Hubbard said he hopes this will bring attention and new viewers to his network and he plans on doing a full-blown marketing campaign. “We think it will drive ratings and put a spotlight on this network that has never been on it before.”
