Ricky Gervais didn’t exactly win the undying devotion of the Hollywood Foreign Press with his snarkiness while hosting the Golden Globes, or did he? It appears Gervais has been asked again to host the Golden Globes. No, really!
You watched the Golden Globes, didn’t you? Well, even if you can’t stand awards shows, I’m sure you know all about host Ricky Gervais and his antics.
Gervais drew the ire of critics, the HFPA and even some of his fans by taking shots at Robert Downey Jr., Charlie Sheen, Scientology, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie plus The Tourist‘s inclusion on the list of nominees. (Oh, come on. Who didn’t make fun of that?)
After the firestorm of criticism Gervais received, everyone assumed they’d get, oh, let’s say loveable furry old Grover to host next year. He’d never say anything bad about the HFPA, would he?
But wait…writing in the UK entertainment magazine Heat, Gervais said, “The ratings went up again, and the organizers asked me to consider a third year.”
Ha! See? It really doesn’t matter who you piss off in Hollywood. Get them ratings and you can slap them across the face as much as you like. Hey, look at Charlie Sheen! No one is really going to mess with his lifestyle (read: help him) because the ratings for Two and a Half Men are through the roof.
Now, Gervais may not actually take them up on their offer. He added, “I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure.”
After the awards ceremony aired, the president of the HFPA, Philip Berk, said Gervais had “crossed the line.”
Gervais stated that he wouldn’t do it again, even if they asked him. He defended his performance by saying, “I did exactly what I went to do — improve on last year’s and have a laugh. The response was staggering. It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks.”
We certainly talked about Gervais and the Golden Globes. So what do you think? Did he go too far? Did you love every second? Would you like him to come back? I certainly would! If not, who should replace him? Let us know your thoughts.
