Ricky Gervais is setting the record straight over the comments that he’s been asked to return to host the 2012 Golden Globes.
Ricky Gervais recently caused more Golden Globe buzz when his comments in the UK magazine Heat alluded that the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had indeed asked him back for a third year. The sharp-tongued comedian’s original comments were: “Organizers asked me to consider a third year.” Turns out the comments weren’t entirely read the right way and Ricky Gervais had some Golden Globe feathers to smooth.
Everyone knows by now Ricky Gervais started a big controversy over his brash gripes during the 2011 Golden Globes but it was actually revealed that an executive at NBC, the network the Golden Globes air on, was the one to rally for Gervais’ return — not the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
After rumors started circulating based on the Heat article, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association released his own statement. “We have not asked him to come back. Nice try, Ricky,” Phil Berk said.
To clear things up on his end, Ricky Gervais told The Hollywood Reporter on February 1, “At no point did I talk to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. I’m absolutely sure they don’t want me back.”
On Gervais’ own blog, he went into further detail on exactly what happened. “The TV show organizers said they were happy with everything and asked me to not rule out a third gig. However, it is not entirely up to them. The Hollywood Foreign Press and various other committees need to meet and agree,” he explained. “I have no idea if they want me back again. It depends whether they care about fifty delicate egos in the room or the 200 million people watching at home who want a laugh. Also, even if they did want me back, at the moment I’m pretty sure I shouldn’t do it. But I’ll tell you this. If they do invite me back and I accept, I’m going to pull exactly the same s*** again or even worse.”
Well, there you have it. Nothing is official yet and it sounds like Ricky Gervais isn’t really putting too much thought into hosting the Golden Globes for a third year in a row. Does anyone else feel like they’re playing a game of ping pong with all the statements being issued over the most unpredictable party of the year?
