American Idol issued a statement apologizing for judge Steven Tyler — but why?
Ryan Seacrest announced on his radio show that American Idolwould be issuing a statement for Steven Tyler’s behavior. “There’s a black card that starts the show tonight,” Seacrest said — but wouldn’t elaborate any more as to what this behavior was. He only said that viewers would know what he was talking about if they had watched last week’s episode.
As promised, the show opened with a black card that read:
“American Idol would like to apologize for last week’s outrageous behavior by Steven Tyler. Mr. Tyler has been warned and assures us it will never happen again.”
In case watchers were confused, they followed it up with a recap, in which Tyler asked contestant Jake Muck, “You know what Muck rhymes with?” Jake responded, “Duck.”
“Read my lips,” Tyler said.
Yep, that was it. Do you think American Idol was really responding to viewers who were offended by Tyler — or was it a way to drum up ratings and get people talking?
With the mass exodus of judges, including Simon Cowell, Ellen DeGeneres and Kara DioGuardi, this is the first year that the Aerosmith frontman has judged American Idol. “I’ve got a good ear for all music and that’s why I thought I would take this. It’s not just a one phase type judging. I’m good for all different music and listening to voicing, and the spirit of, and the imperfections of someone’s voice because not all great singers make great rock stars,” Tyler said. “It’s some of those voices that aren’t the best that make the best rock stars I mean to say. So it’s been fun. I don’t take this too seriously and I take it seriously, so it’s been a real hoot for me.”
