Valentine’s Day book guide: Unusual Valentine’s Day read

Lenore Hart, author of the critically-praised novel Becky, has written a disturbingly delightful fiction novel about the life and marriage of Edgar Allan Poe and his child bride, Virginia “Sissy” Clemm.

This is not your typical Valentine’s Day love story, but it’s sure to haunt your heart. A historical fiction novel that captures the life of one of history’s most ominous writers, The Raven’s Bride is a book told from the perspective of Sissy, Edgar Allan Poe’s young bride, who was also his cousin.

The Raven’s Bride

She was his muse, inspiring stories and poems, and his caregiver when his demons overtook him. Her early death was his undoing.

The Raven’s Bride is a beautifully-written coming of age story, as Sissy grows from a young girl living in genteel poverty, through her adolescence, marriage and young adulthood as Poe’s wife. It’s also a love story, showing the ups and downs of Sissy and Poe’s tumultuous and complicated marriage.

Seeing Poe through Sissy’s eyes offers an intimate glimpse into both characters to create a narrative that Poe fans as well as lovers of literature and history will enjoy.
