The 2011 Grammy Awards certainly didn’t disappoint on any level. Lady Gaga arrived in an egg and won Grammys while Justin Bieber rocked the stage with Usher, but went home empty-handed. Country group Lady Antebellum turned out to be the night’s biggest force but it was Eminem who might have been the standout star.
Whether it was Lady Gaga’s egg arrival or Eminem’s performance with Dr. Dre and Rihanna, the 2011 Grammy Awards produced quite a few buzz-worthy moments. SheKnows has your ticket to what is sure to be some of the hottest Grammy gossip.
Grammy Awards highlights
The 2011 Grammy Awards kicked off with a special tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin. The moment brought together Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Florence Welch, Yolanda Adams and Martina McBride for the first time. If you missed it, just imagine a giant battle of the voices.
Everyone’s going to be talking about the performances. This year, the Grammy Award winners might have fallen second to the spectacular stage sets of the night. Whether it was honorable mentions for Katy Perry’s jaw-dropping entrance on a swing and kick ass medley of Not Like the Movies and Teenage Dream or Muse’s Grammy debut, it was all electrifying. Miranda Lambert’s haunting delivery of The House That Built Me made it hard to look away for fear of missing something.
Two giant standouts of the night were Lady Gaga and of course Justin Bieber’s collaboration with Usher and Jaden Smith. A third that might have snuck up on us was the reunion of Eminem and Dr. Dre for the mere fact that it was Dre’s first live television performance in a decade. Check out SheKnows’ complete breakdown of these three monster acts. Before we move on, we do have to give a shout-out to Cee-Lo Green and Gwyneth Paltrow for their performance of Forget You complete with puppet musicians. The duo decided puppets would brighten up the stage, replacing the normal backup band with little guys.
Grammy Award winners
The Grammy Awards winners’ circle threw a few curveballs throughout the night. The best acceptance speech of the night goes to Train. After they won Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group, they gave a very special shout-out to Justin Bieber for “not being a duo or group!”
Speaking of Justin Bieber, the current music sensation was shut out of his categories. Lady Gaga, on the other hand, was overwhelmed with emotion as she took home a couple of awards including Best Pop Vocal Album for The Fame Monster. Oddly enough, she took the opportunity to thank Whitney Houston for giving her the inspiration to sing Born This Way — we thought it was an interesting choice.
Lady Antebellum has been taking the country world by storm and they got their recognition with a number of Grammy wins including Record of the Year and Song of the Year for Need You Now.
Eminem got his Grammy props for Best Rap Album for Recovery and surprisingly enough he was very poised behind the mic with his “thank yous.” Everything about Eminem screamed perfection during the show. His performance, his speech, it was all just cool. Unfortunately, he was beat out by Arcade Fire for Album of the Year.
