Born to be Wild, the new IMAX 3D documentary, shines the spotlight on two incredible women who have given their entire lives to saving orphaned animals. It is a heartwarming story and it is with great pleasure that SheKnows sat down for an exclusive interview with the film’s subjects, Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas and Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick.
Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas lives in Borneo and has for decades taken on the responsibility of raising orphaned orangutans. The adorable animals have been pushed out of their home by human advancement, leaving them without parents and hope for survival.
Meanwhile, halfway across the globe in Kenya, Dr. Dame Daphne M. Sheldrick answered the same calling. Except for her, the animals in need of rescue are baby elephants left orphaned by poachers.
Both share a passion for the animals that have made their lives. They raised their children in Borneo and Kenya and the film Born to be Wild (narrated by Morgan Freeman) even has touching photos of their children as youngsters playing and taking care of animals not much bigger than themselves.
Each woman is an inspiration. Their calling is something that filmmakers have captured with impeccable grace in Born to be Wild (don’t miss our five-star review).
After meeting with both, it was truly an honor to share space with two extraordinary human beings who have made a life of pushing back against the advancement of humankind at the expense of the native creatures of the land.
