Kim Kardashian Cosmo cover ignites controversy

Kim Kardashian looks gorgeous on the cover of this month’s Cosmo Turkish edition, but the mag unwittingly started a political firestorm.

Kim Kardashian is arguably the most famous Armenian in the world and has always been a passionate supporter of her heritage — so it was a big surprise to see her on the cover of the Turkish edition of Cosmo in the month Genocide Remembrance Day is marked.

While Kim took to her blog to address the issue, Aram Hamparian, the executive director of the Armenian National Committee of America, spoke out harshly against the magazine. “It’s disrespectful to Kim Kardashian and to all Armenians for the publishers of Cosmopolitan to use her image, without her permission, on the month we mark Turkey’s genocide against the Armenian people.”

“Instead of trying to turn a profit in Turkey by callously featuring a cover photo of a descendant of Armenian Genocide survivors in its April issue, Cosmopolitan should find creative ways to educate its readers about the Turkish government’s shameful effort to cover up this atrocity.”

How could she be on the cover of a magazine without knowing ahead of time? Kim did the shoot for Cosmo with the understanding that the photos could be used in any international edition, but the agreement was no more specific than that.

As for Cosmo, to them it seems like a non-issue. Their only statement on the controversy was, “Kim Kardashian is one of our favorite cover girls. We were thrilled to have the opportunity to photograph her for the Cosmopolitan editions worldwide.”
