Rio once again flew to the top of the box office for the second week in a row.
Who would have thought the story of Blu the macaw would end up being the top-grossing flick of 2011 thus far? Rio landed in the top spot for the second week in a row, taking down two big-name new releases: Madea’s Big Happy Family andWater for Elephants.
Rio’s second week at number one took in $26.8 million, bringing its total gross to $286 million. Tyler Perry’s new release, Madea’s Big Happy Family, came in at number two with a respectable $25.8 million, while the Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon vehicle, Water for Elephants, slid into the third spot with $17.5 million.
Hop delivered an Easter weekend total of $12.5 million and Scream 4 rounded out the top five with $7.2 million.
The beautiful Disney documentary African Cats, narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, opened with $6.4 million to claim the number six spot.
Soul Surfer came in at number seven with $5.6 million, while the horror film Insidious took number eight with $5.4 million. Hanna and the Source Code rounded out the top ten with $5.3 million and $5.1 million each.
