Lady Gaga schools American Idol top 4

The final four brought the drama this week on American Idol with a special guest — Lady Gaga!

The final four of American Idol got down with two songs this week — inspirational and Leiber and Stoller. How did James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart do under the influence of Lady Gaga during round two? Let’s just say, she opened up a whole new side of Scotty McCreery! Oh, we also have two stellar quotes from Steven Tyler you don’t want to miss.

American Idol round one: Inspirational songs

The first round of the final four showdown was hands down a three-way tie between James Durbin, Scotty McCreery and Lauren Alaina.

James Durbin jammed his way into the final three with a mock rock concert featuring Don’t Stop Believin’. He was trying to get on Randy Jackson’s good side with that one. We were so busy rocking out that we forgot it was a competition. Randy couldn’t stop screaming, “You did it!” He didn’t need his second song — it was just a formality.

This is the season of country cuties eating the American Idol stage alive! Scotty McCreery tugged at America’s heartstrings with his soulful rendition of Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning). He doesn’t even need to try at this point. He sat on the stage with a stool and a guitar, just gliding through the first round. Randy Jackson’s opinion said it all: “You set your mark on this stage. You are ready for superstardom.”

Lauren Alaina also went for the heart of America, taking on Martina McBride’s Anyway for the victims of the recent tornados in the South. This brings us to the first ridiculously stellar quote from Steven Tyler. We should begin by telling you, Lauren did an absolutely amazing job and everyone agreed. Tyler just happened to compare her to something interesting. “Your voice is so perfect and so pure, you deliver a song like a blue plate special,” he raved! We’re pretty sure we weren’t at IHOP. We love us some Steven Tyler!

This brings us to Haley Reinhart. She was left sulking after round one. She tried to make Earth Song her own, but her emotions got the best of her and she screeched at the end. The judges really went for the jugular on their critique and it caused some fun fighting behind the judges’ table. You know when Randy starts out with, “Let me tell you what I didn’t like about that,” you’re in trouble.

American Idol round two: Lady Gaga mentors

Lady Gaga mentored the contestants in the songs of Leiber and Stoller and it got really weird for a few contestants.

First, Haley Reinhart came back swinging with I Who Have Nothing. She controlled her growl and delivered a powerful performance that left the judges begging for her to continue delivering. Lady Gaga really pushed her to bring the drama because she was worried about her becoming boring — and she was right. The problem is that it might be too late for that.

Things got interesting when Scotty McCreery met Lady Gaga. His boyish cheeks got really red when she asked him to imagine his microphone was his girlfriend. You can’t tell Scotty McCreery to make love to his microphone! Well, you can if you’re Lady Gaga! He had fun with Young Blood. Here comes the second fabulous Steven Tyler quote of the night: “Scotty, you made Gaga’s ya-ya go la la.” Let’s not even try to figure that one out. Just ride the Tyler wave, people.

Lauren Alaina came back with a gritty and sassy performance of Evil. She actually didn’t want to sing the word evil and Lady Gaga was not feeling that! You don’t stand in front of the queen of cool and tell her you can’t sing a tiny word like evil because you don’t want America to think you are. You’re talking to a lady who pushes the limits. Lauren gave in and rocked our world!

Was anyone wishing Lady Gaga would grab James Durbin by the hips? If so, your wish has been granted. He switched up Love Potion No. 9 to Gaga’s liking, but she wasn’t feeling his hip action. Don’t worry, she shook those hips loose with her famous dancing and he was good to go. Do we even need to say the same thing we’ve been saying for weeks? Where can we buy James Durbin tickets? His concert is right on deck.

Round two goes to James all the way!

What did you think of Lady Gaga’s mentorship? Did she school the American Idol hopefuls to greatness? Don’t forget to check out who goes home and who makes it to the final three during Thursday’s results show.
