Another record set by Lady Gaga: On Saturday, she became Twitter’s first user with 10 million followers. We weren’t surprised as Gaga is a powerful force with dedicated fans also known as “Little Monsters.” After careful review of her updates, we’re left wondering if these Little Monsters are really getting an inside glimpse into her life or if it’s really just shameless self-promotion.
Why, of course Lady Gaga was the first to reach 10 million followers on Twitter. With Justin Bieber close behind at 9,700,000, Twitter now eerily reveals who is trending in our celebrity-watching lives. Lady Gaga was excited to reach the record and she appropriately tweeted out to her fans, “10MillionMonsters! I’m speechless, we did it! Its an illness how I love you. Leaving London smiling.”
It seems great her fans, oh sorry, her “Little Monsters” can receive updates about Lady Gaga’s daily life and inside details thanks to the miracle of social media. However, upon closer inspection of her Twitter account, a few things jumped out as a bit odd. For one, Gaga only has 745 tweets. Oh well, quality is much more important than quantity, right? And that’s where the true colors seem to shine the brightest. Almost every tweet from the past few days is promotion for her new single Hair. Other updates reflect dates of appearances, new magazine covers landed, or how she’s emotional thinking about how much she loves her fans. Okay… where’s the good stuff? For someone who mentions how personally she’s attached to her music and fans, her Twitter seems very carefully orchestrated.
Using Twitter for self-promotion isn’t a bad thing. In fact it’s fantastic for building a brand and an image. It just seems a bit of a shame that with such intense fans who pride themselves on believing everything Lady Gaga does is original and progressive, we’re not able to catch a more intimate glimpse into her life without purchasing more of her: a magazine, an HBO special, an album. We’re wondering if her Twitter updates might even be managed by someone else because they lack so much of that personal connection Gaga claims to have with her fans.
Lady Gaga has a fantastic ability to stir the conversation pot around her. It’s an amazing feat for Lady Gaga to reach 10 million followers on Twitter, that’s a lot of people following her every move.
