Season 10 of American Idol is getting ready to announce who America put into next week’s finale. As we look back at all the shocking twists that were thrown at us, it’s clear: The final three are a welcome, yet unexpected surprise.
We’ve grown accustomed to American Idol’s Ryan Seacrest boasting shocking results that we don’t want to miss — but he wasn’t kidding this year. As we get set to find out which two will head into the American Idol finale — Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina or Haley Reinhart — it’s hard to think about the shocks that took our favorites out of the competition.
The top three are all deserving, and we knew Scotty McCreery would be here at the end, but let’s take a look at how we got here due to some shocking eliminations. Was it the curse of the judges’ love? Perhaps the online voting encouraged fans to click and vote more. We’ll never know for sure, but it’s fun thinking about it.
Possibly, the hardest elimination that brought us to our top three was that of James Durbin. Durbin rocked his way so close to the top three and gave us a taste of what a James Durbin concert would sound like, but for some reason America didn’t put him through. Did the judges’ love and confidence give America faith he’d be fine?
When the judges love you, it can be the kiss of death. This year’s American Idol save was used on Casey Abrams, whom the judges championed early on. The crazy-cool, jazz-loving singer was completely thrown by America’s choice to send him packing, but completely lost it when the judges kept him around. Unfortunately, he was doomed from the start and was once again shocked when America sent him home a short time later.
Pia Toscano is another favorite who was sent home from the competition early. Another victim of the judges’ love, we ask? Toscano’s elimination sparked so much buzz that she was seen everywhere following her boot — including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Both Casey Abrams and Pia Toscano were considered frontrunners, but they didn’t even make it close to setting foot on the finale stage at the Nokia Theater. At least James Durbin made it to the final four.
Another big factor in helping singers get votes from their fan base is the addition of the online voting. People get lazy. They don’t want to reach for their phones. If they’re sitting by the computer, a vote is a simple click away.
That brings us to an excellent point. Of the three frontrunners eliminated, two have a demographic more likely to possibly not head to the computer and keep clicking. The top three are young and in touch with today’s youth. Today’s youth are obsessed with computers. Is it all making sense? It means that the votes could have easily swayed to the top three we have now, compared to the singers we thought would make it to the end.
Again, this is all opinion from an American Idol-loving critic. Regardless of how we got here, Scotty McCreery, Lauren Alaina and Haley Reinhart are our final three. Who do you think is going to the American Idol finale?
