The Book of Mormon went into the Tony Awards leading the nominations and carrying high expectations of sweeping the categories. The satirical show from the creators of South Park, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, walked away with a multitude of trophies including Best Musical and Best Musical Direction.
The always fabulous and witty Neil Patrick Harris played emcee at this year’s Tony Awards and let’s just say he did not disappoint. He didn’t the first time he did the honors either.
In between the night’s homage to winners like The Book of Mormon and The Normal Heart, Neil Patrick Harris kept the Tony Awards moving at a nice pace that left less time for yawning and more time for viewer fun! His opening number claiming Broadway’s “not just for gays anymore” was absolutely hysterical and included cameos by Stephen Colbert and Brooke Shields — who, by the way, provided a hysterical improv flub. He wouldn’t be NPH if he didn’t put 30 seconds on the clock to take a few jabs at Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark including the name changer — Spider-Man: Turn Off the Lawsuits.
Presenters on hand to delve out trophies included Daniel Radcliffe, James Earl Jones, Harry Connick, Jr., Christie Brinkley, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Whoopi Goldberg, with performances by How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, Catch Me If You Can and The Book of Mormon lighting up the stage.
The Book of Mormon held strong during the night, taking home among its numerous awards Best Musical and Best Musical Direction. It couldn’t hold off Catch Me If You Can’s Norbert Leo Butz in the Best Actor in a Musical category, however.
As for the ladies, Nikki M. James represented for The Book of Mormon taking home the Best Featured Actress in a Musical honor, while Ellen Barkin took home the Tony for Best Actress in a Featured Role for the play The Normal Heart.
Check out our list of winners and tell us what you thought of Neil Patrick Harris’ repeat hosting duties.
