Missy Elliott Reveals Secret Thyroid Disease Struggles

Hip hop star Missy Elliott has been quietly struggling with her health, due to a battle with thyroid disease. A series of frightening symptoms first alerted Missy Elliott something was awry.

The health of Missy Elliott has been a roller coaster the past few years. Though word of Missy Elliott’s thyroid disease is just getting out, the problems the star has faced date back to 2008, when she was diagnosed with Graves’ disease — a disorder which affects the thyroid.

When Missy Elliott’s thyroid disease symptoms first appeared, they came on so quickly she nearly lost the ability to do daily tasks such as drive a car and write a note.

She describes one scary incident to People magazine, “I was (driving and) trying to put my foot on the brake, but my leg was jumping. I couldn’t keep the brake down and almost crashed.”

Along with the poor muscle control, Missy Elliott says she suffered mood swings and hair loss. “I couldn’t write because my nervous system was so bad,” explains the 39-year-old. “I couldn’t even use a pen.”

The severity of her symptoms caused Missy to seek radiation treatment, which greatly improved her condition. “I’m 30 pounds lighter because I’ve been exercising,” she says. “My thyroid is functioning, so I haven’t had to take medication in about nine months. (But) you live with it for the rest of your life.”

Best wishes to Missy Elliott for continued good health!
