Soulja Boy buys jet for $55 million

What’s going down as one of the most expensive birthday gifts ever? Soulja Boy might take the prize with his multi-million dollar jet purchase. And that’s just one of his birthday gifts to himself.

Some of us spend our 21st birthdays getting drunk at out favorite bar or club. Some of us even splurge by grabbing our friends and heading to Vegas. Not Soulja Boy.

The young rap star just spent $35 million on a Gulfstream jet and will spend another $20 million in upgrades and customization. And to celebrate his purchase, he’s throwing a $300,000 party in Miami this weekend. Here’s hoping bankruptcy isn’t just around the corner for this kid.

Soulja Boy, real name DeAndre Cortez Way, has actually made history books as the youngest ever African-American owner of a Gulfstream jet.

While he’s known for his chart-topping music, he’s also the CEO of a private-label clothing line and working on upcoming film releases, a new album and an EA sports endorsement tour. Cortez was #18 on the Forbes list of wealthiest hip-hop artists of 2010 thanks in large part to this 2007 success of his debut album, “Crank That,” which was certified platinum the same year. His follow-up albums were both certified gold.

The purchase may be the result of some heavy retail therapy. Cortez lost his little brother in March of 2010 in a car accident and his other brother attempted suicide just a few days later. Here’s wishing Soulja the best birthday money can buy.
