Why was Lea Michele once told she was too ugly for show business?
Lea Michelle knows she’s famous. That’s the vibe the Harper’s Bazaar reporter got when he met with the big-voiced Glee star at a Le Pain Quotidien in Manhattan’s West Village.
“[S]he’s addicted to her PQ, as she calls it — she is wearing a pair of standard-issue Hollywood-star sunglasses, and she slips into a quiet corner table, looking around to be sure she hasn’t been recognized,” writer Marshall Heyman wrote.
“She seems conscious that 1) she’s famous and 2) she’s gotten the occasional bad rap for some supposed prima-donna-like behavior.”
Is the diva reputation deserved or not? That probably depends on whom you ask. There’s one thing no one can argue about, though: Michele knows how to work hard.
“I don’t stop,” Lea Michele said of her work ethic. “It’s my nature. People have to tell me to slow down. I plan on playing every role on Broadway. I want to do Evita. I want to do Sweeney Todd with [Glee costar] Chris Colfer. We want to do Wicked. I’ll be Elphaba and he wants to play ‘Guy-linda.’ I want to do movies, make music. Glee is only the beginning.”
She plans to start accomplishing all of that once she graduates from McKinley High School this season on the hit Fox show. It seems like a big jump for the girl who was told that she’d never make it in the business because of her looks.
“I’m five foot three. I don’t look like a lot of other people, you know what I mean? I look like I’m 12,” Michele said in the interview for the magazine’s September issue. “How many managers told me, ‘Get a nose job. You’re not pretty enough,’ But I proved them wrong.”
And that she did.
“People have to remember this is all new for us. We’re all reasonably young, except for Cory [Monteith], who’s old. I’ve learned some lessons,” she added. “But people are going to say what they want to say. I know who I am, and I’m not perfect.”
